“Nigeria Is Bleeding” — Peter Obi Calls for State of Emergency on Insecurity

ABUJA — Former Anambra State governor and Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has raised alarm over the worsening security situation in Nigeria, urging the federal government to declare a state of emergency.

In a post on his official X handle on Sunday, Obi described the spate of killings across the country as “stark evidence” that Nigeria is in the grip of a full-blown security crisis.

His reaction followed a bloody weekend that saw eight personnel of the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) killed in Edo State, while five soldiers and at least 58 civilians were reportedly massacred in Borno State.

“When over 100 Nigerians are killed in a single weekend, our casualty figures rival those of countries officially at war. This is no longer business as usual,” Obi lamented.

He extended condolences to the bereaved families and urged the government to act swiftly in tracking down the perpetrators and bringing them to justice.

“It is time to declare a national war on insecurity — to mobilise every resource, every agency, every state, and to suspend all distractions while we begin the process of reclaiming our nation from lawlessness,” Obi wrote.

The former presidential candidate insisted that unless drastic measures are taken, insecurity will continue to undermine the nation’s stability and development.
