Abuja, Nigeria — The Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction, Dr. Benard Doro, has disclosed that an estimated 3.7 million Nigerians are currently living as internally displaced persons (IDPs) across the country.
Speaking on The Morning Show on Arise Television on Friday, the minister explained that the figure remains an estimate due to the fluid nature of displacement in Nigeria.
According to Doro, population movements continue as some displaced persons are being resettled while new cases of displacement are recorded in various parts of the country.
“In terms of the figure, it is very difficult to say this number is exact, but it is estimated at around 3.7 million,” he said. “The reason is that this is not a static situation. The issue of displacement in our country is dynamic. While some people are being resettled, others are being added.”
The minister, however, noted that most individuals currently residing in IDP camps have been properly documented. He added that the government maintains access to the majority of those living in the camps.
Doro emphasized that efforts are ongoing to manage resettlement processes and respond to emerging displacement cases nationwide.
