American rapper Nicki Minaj is set to address a United Nations event in New York on Tuesday concerning reported jihadist attacks against Christians in Nigeria. She will speak alongside U.S. Ambassador to the UN Michael Waltz and presidential adviser Alex Bruesewitz, who is convening the gathering.
The appearance was first reported by Time magazine correspondent Eric Cortellessa, who shared the news via his social media account Sunday evening. Ambassador Waltz praised Minaj as “not only arguably the greatest female recording artist, but also a principled individual who refuses to remain silent in the face of injustice.” He expressed gratitude for her willingness to shine a spotlight on what he described as “atrocities against Christians in Nigeria.”
Minaj responded by saying she does not take the opportunity “lightly,” noting that her influence carries a “greater purpose.” “I will never stand down in the face of injustice,” she declared.
The event follows former President Donald Trump’s claim of an ongoing “Christian genocide” in Nigeria and his announcement that the country would be designated a “Country of Particular Concern.” Trump also urged Congress to act immediately. Minaj publicly praised him for raising awareness on the issue.
The Nigerian government, however, has strongly denied the allegations of religious persecution. Officials maintain that the country’s security challenges are rooted in criminal activity rather than faith-based violence. Despite this, U.S. officials have continued to raise concerns about religiously motivated attacks in Nigeria.
