UN condemns shooting of Lekki protesters, calls for end to Police brutality in Nigeria

United Nations’ Secretary General, Antonio Guterres

Stephane Dujarric, Spokesperson of the United Nations’ Secretary General, Antonio Guterres, stated in a communiqué the position of the UN calling for an end to Police brutality in Nigeria.

According to the communiqué, the UN condemned the violent clashes that claimed multiple lived and caused many injuries.

The communiqué also stated that the Secretary General has been following up with all information regarding the recent developments in Nigeria.

Mr Guterres expressed his condolences to the bereaved families and wished a speedy recovery to those injured.

He, therefore, called on Nigerian authorities to investigate the incidents and hold the perpetrators accountable.

The Secretary General also encouraged the authorities to swiftly explore methods to de-escalate the situation while reiterating the fact that the UN is ready to support national efforts towards finding a lasting solution.
