On Friday, October 13, the Super Eagles of Nigeria drew 2-2 with Saudi Arabia in Portugal to make it the 15th time in a row the Nigerian side failed to win a league game.

Since defeating Egypt 1-0 in March 2019 with to an early goal from Paul Onuachu, the Super Eagles have lost nine and drawn six of their last 15 friendlies. However, on Monday, October 16, the Super Eagles faced Mozambique in their 16th friendly game in the last four years.

Despite the absence of injured Victor Osimhen and in-form Kelechi Iheanacho, who is thought to be dealing with personal difficulties, the Nigerian team held their own against a determined Mozambique side.

Mozambique startled Nigeria with the opening goal as early as the sixth minute, courtesy of a shot by Geny Catamo. They led until the 19th minute, when Terem Moffi, who presently plays for OGC Nice, equalized with a close-range strike.

Nigeria seized the lead for the first time in the game at the half-hour mark when Frank Onyeka scored from the edge of the 18-yard box. To make matters worse for Mozambique, Edmilson was sent off in the 38th minute.

Before the end of the first half, a Mozambique player committed a handball in the penalty box, and the referee awarded Nigeria a penalty, which Simon Moses scored in injury time to make it 3-1.

Despite playing with a man advantage, Mozambique attempted a comeback in the second half, but all they could muster was a goal in the 55th minute from Faisal Bangal. As a result, the game ended in a 3-2 victory for Nigeria.
