Residents Trapped as Flood Overruns Estate in Abuja

0

On Friday, June 23, 2023, a heavy downpour fell in Abuja and flooded a popular estate in Lugbe, Abuja, Trademore Estate.

This downpour which started in the early hours of Friday morning continued until afternoon trapped a lot of residents in their houses and cars many of which are unknown at the moment.

The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) stated in a situation report on the search and rescue operations that the driver of a Peugeot 406 with license plate YLA 681 FS drowned in the flood and is still missing.

According to the report, “Four persons have been rescued and are in stable condition.”

The Federal Ministry of Environment’s flood department, NEMA, Fire Service, FCT FEMA, Red Cross, and other stakeholders are each responding to the flood in turn.

On Friday, a NEMA representative appealed to everyone who lives in the estate’s flood-prone regions to leave for a safer location.

“If you are aware that your home was constructed in a flood zone, kindly relocate, even if it is only to save a life. Real estate can go as long as lives are saved.

“You can see how all of these automobiles are now submerged under water. Never undervalue the power of water—it can sweep people away. We are begging you not to lose any lives this year.”

This flooding is caused by a lack of sufficient drainage system in the estate.
