The Forum of Former Local Government Chairmen from Osun West Senatorial District under the All Progressives Congress (APC) has made a strong case for the 2026 governorship ticket to be zoned to their district, provided former governor Adegboyega Oyetola does not recontest.
In a communiqué issued after a meeting in Iwo, Osun State, attended by 41 former council chairmen, the group emphasized the need for justice, fairness, and equity in the party’s candidate selection process.
Signed by Aderemi Abbas, former Chairman of Irewole Local Government Area, and 40 others, the communiqué highlighted the district’s historical marginalization in producing a governor since the state’s creation.
“Osun West remains the most suitable and best positioned to win the next governorship election for the APC,” the communiqué stated. “Since the state’s inception, Osun West has been disadvantaged, holding the governorship seat for only five years and six months, compared to Osun East’s eight years and Osun Central’s 15 years.”
The group pledged to collaborate with other districts to present a credible candidate capable of unseating the incumbent governor, Ademola Adeleke, in the next elections. They also reiterated their support for Oyetola, asserting that the former governor retains the right of first refusal but stressed the necessity of zoning the ticket to Osun West if he opts out of the race.
The communiqué further urged Chief Bisi Akande, the APC’s pioneer National Chairman, to back their cause, describing him as a “repository of political wisdom” committed to fairness and inclusivity.
