The organised labour in Nasarawa State has called off its indefinite strike following a significant breakthrough in negotiations with the state government over the consequential adjustments to the minimum wage.
Labour leaders announced the suspension during a joint press conference held on Monday in Lafia, the state capital.
The strike, which began on December 1, was in compliance with a directive from the national headquarters of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) to enforce the implementation of the new minimum wage.
Speaking at the briefing, NLC Chairman Ismaila Okoh disclosed that an agreement was reached after extensive negotiations and interventions by key stakeholders.
“A template has been finalised for the consequential adjustments of the minimum wage for workers on Grade Levels 7 to 16,” Okoh stated.
TUC Chairman Mohammed Doma further announced that the payment of the new minimum wage, including the agreed adjustments, would be implemented retroactively, starting from December 1.
The labour leaders commended workers for their resilience, solidarity, and peaceful conduct throughout the industrial action. They urged them to return to work immediately and rededicate themselves to their duties.
The resolution marks a significant step towards addressing workers’ welfare in the state, ensuring improved conditions for public servants.
