Gen. Yakubu Gowon (retd), a former Head of State, has rejected allegations circulating on various social media platforms claiming he died just 10 days before his 89th birthday.

The announcement of Gowon’s death came after the former head of state left for the UK several weeks ago, not attending state activities, and has yet to return.

Adeyeye Ajayi, a personal aide of General Gowon, revealed this on Monday amid confusion caused by a social media story on the alleged death of the former Head of State, stating he is still very much alive and well.

According to Ajayi, General Gowon stated, “I am still alive and well. I’m not in a rush.”

In addition, Olorogun Barr. Kenneth Gbagi, the Delta State governorship candidate of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) in the 2023 general election, disputed the claim that the former Head of State was deceased.

Gbagi said that Gowon is now in the United Kingdom, describing the social media story as the “handiwork of mischief makers who wished the former head of state dead.”

However, the former Minister of State for Education, speaking through his Chief Press Secretary, Orusi Kenneth, on Monday, verified that the former Head of State is alive, well, and in London.

“General Gowon is still very much around with us, hale and hearty,” Gbagi remarked. He’s not in a rush to get anywhere.”

“I, Gbagi, just spoke with him,” claimed the former head of the Legal Aid Council of Nigeria, urging Nigerians to disregard rumors regarding General Gowon’s death. “I hereby deny the death rumors about my friend, General Gowon.

“He has communicated to Nigerians that he is still alive and well. Gowon is still alive.”
