Five burnt to death as tanker explodes on Lagos-Ibadan Expressway

A tanker explosion on Wednesday claimed five lives on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.

The incident occurred around Tunji Alegi Filling Station, Kwakyama, at Ogere, in the Ikenne Local Government Area of Ogun State and it was gathered that the victims were “burnt beyond recognition” during the incident.

It was also gathered that a petrol laden tanker had crashed into another truck, spilt its content and went up in flames, burning at least five persons and about five vehicles were burnt down during the explosion.

The Public Relations Officer of the Federal Road Safety Corps in the state, Florence Okpe confirmed the incident on Wednesday in Abeokuta.

Okpe explained that the tanker had collided with another truck which led to a fire outbreak.

She blamed the incident on “wrongful overtaking and dangerous driving” on the part of the tanker’s driver.

Okpe said corpses of the victims were recovered from the crashed trucks and deposited at a Morgue in Ipara, Remo North Local Government Area.

She said, “A total of five persons were burnt beyond recognition.

“They were recovered from the crashed trucks and have been deposited at FOS Morgue Ipara. Further updates soon.

“The suspected causes of the multiple crashes were wrongful overtaking and dangerous driving on the part of the petrol tanker. The tanker collided with a truck. This led to a fire outbreak.”

Okpe hinted that traffic along the route had been diverted to avoid secondary crash.

She advised motorists to remain calm and cooperate with traffic managers.

A similar incident had happened on Sunday night where seven persons were burnt to death on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.

The FRSC while confirming the incident had said “a total of 10 persons were involved in the crash.”

The FRSC had also added that “three persons were injured while seven others were burnt beyond recognition only to be identified with skulls.”
