Edo Governor Declares State of Emergency in Public Schools

Governor Monday Okpebholo of Edo State has declared a state of emergency in public schools, citing deplorable conditions that hinder quality education.

During an inspection tour of schools in Ikpoba-Okha and Egor local government areas on Tuesday, Okpebholo expressed deep concern over the deteriorating state of urban schools. He emphasized that Edo children deserve a conducive learning environment that nurtures their potential.

The governor’s visit included Army Day Secondary School in Ikpoba-Okha and Evbareke Secondary School in Egor, where he condemned the poor infrastructure and lack of basic amenities.

“I feel deeply saddened by the conditions I witnessed today. These schools are in an unacceptable state,” Okpebholo stated. “During my campaign, I promised to prioritize education, and today, I am making good on that promise. Work will commence immediately at Evbareke Secondary School and Army Day Secondary School.”

He noted the absence of perimeter fencing in the schools and highlighted the devastating impact of erosion on access roads, particularly the Boundary Road leading to Army Day Secondary School.

“The road is in terrible condition, making it difficult for students to access education. That must change,” he affirmed.

Edo State Commissioner for Education, Paddy Iyamu, reiterated the governor’s commitment to providing quality education for all students, including those with disabilities.

“The governor is not just making promises—he is taking action. His leadership will bring the transformation Edo’s education sector desperately needs,” Iyamu assured.

Vice Principal of Students’ Affairs at Evbareke Secondary School, Mrs. Mary Izewingie, disclosed that despite repeated calls for intervention since 2022, no action had been taken.

“We cried out for help, but no one listened. Learning has been difficult, and our attempts to fix the situation have been undone by the rains,” she said.

With the governor’s directive, rehabilitation efforts are set to begin immediately, marking a new era of infrastructural development in Edo’s public schools.
