The federal government has acknowledged the ongoing issue of lengthy queues at airports caused by checks conducted by multiple agencies, including the Department of State Services (DSS), the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Customs, and Quarantine services.
A senior government official noted that some individuals subjected to these checks might be under security scrutiny. However, he emphasized the need for Customs to focus solely on items being imported into the country rather than those being exported.
“These agencies have been operating at our airports long before we assumed office, and they are not directly under our control to make unilateral changes,” he stated.
The federal government recently approved new measures on December 5 to address the inefficiencies and improve the passenger experience at airports. Further details on the implementation of these measures are expected in the coming weeks.
