NERC Issues Urgent Safety Alert on Fallen Power Lines, Warns Against Risky Rescue Attempts

The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) has issued a strong public safety advisory, cautioning Nigerians to stay away from fallen electricity wires and electrocuted victims, warning that impulsive rescue efforts could result in multiple fatalities.

In a statement released on Monday, the Commission emphasized that electricity is indiscriminate and can pass instantly from one person to another upon contact. It warned that touching a live wire or attempting to rescue an electrocuted individual with bare hands could lead to additional casualties.

“Never touch a live wire or an active victim with your bare hands,” NERC stated, stressing that what may appear to be an act of help could worsen the situation.

The regulator urged members of the public to maintain a safe distance from such scenes and resist the instinct to intervene physically. According to the Commission, moving a victim without proper training and protective equipment exposes rescuers to grave danger.

NERC advised that the safest course of action during electricity-related emergencies is to promptly notify trained professionals equipped to handle such incidents.

“Immediately report the incident to your nearest DisCo,” the statement added.

The advisory applies to situations where live wires are spotted on the ground or when individuals are observed being electrocuted. The Commission encouraged Nigerians to prioritize personal safety and avoid unnecessary risks.

NERC noted that the warning forms part of broader efforts to reduce preventable injuries and deaths linked to electricity accidents. It also called on communities to remain vigilant and actively share safety information.

Maintaining composure, staying informed, and exercising caution during power-related emergencies can be life-saving, the Commission concluded.
