The Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) has suspended its planned nationwide strike earlier scheduled to begin on January 12.
The decision was announced on Sunday in a statement issued by the association’s Secretary-General, Shuaibu Ibrahim.
NARD had earlier declared the strike following its Emergency National Executive Council (E-NEC) meeting held on January 2, citing unresolved issues with the Federal Government.
According to the association, the proposed industrial action was meant to press home its demands, which include improved welfare, better working conditions, and the resolution of longstanding disputes affecting resident doctors across the country.
However, the leadership of the association said the strike has now been put on hold, indicating that engagements with relevant government authorities are ongoing.
The suspension offers temporary relief to patients and healthcare facilities that had been bracing for a disruption in medical services nationwide, though NARD warned that it would not hesitate to revive the strike if its demands are not satisfactorily addressed.
