‘My Opposition Is Based on Principle, Not Politics’ — Sowore Explains Absence from ADC’s INEC Protest

Activist politician Omoyele Sowore has explained why he did not personally participate in the “Occupy INEC” protest organised by leaders of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Abuja.

The protest, led by prominent ADC figures including Atiku Abubakar, David Mark, Rauf Aregbesola, Peter Obi, Rotimi Amaechi and Rabiu Kwankwaso, was staged at the headquarters of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) over the alleged delisting of a faction within the party.

Speaking with journalists after the demonstration, Sowore clarified that while he supports protests against electoral irregularities, his absence was rooted in ideological differences.

“I support any form of protest against irregularities. This is what we have consistently advocated—that meaningful change cannot occur without civic action,” he said.

He noted that although he encouraged participation by sharing mobilisation materials and deploying supporters, his personal stance on opposition politics differs from that of many political actors.

Sowore criticised what he described as opportunistic activism among some politicians, arguing that many of the issues being protested today were created by the same individuals during their time in power.

“Some of the problems we are confronting now were created by these same people when they had the opportunity to lead,” he stated.

He further questioned the consistency of political engagement by opposition figures, singling out Atiku Abubakar as an example.

“My opposition is principled. It is not seasonal or tied to elections. Once elections are over, many of them disengage. For instance, Atiku returns to Dubai where he resides, and the activism fades,” Sowore said.

He emphasised that his activism is driven by a long-standing commitment to accountability and governance, rather than electoral cycles.

“I am not in opposition for its own sake. I stand against anything that is wrong in Nigeria—whether it is done by those in power or those in opposition,” he added.
