Musk’s ‘Money Can’t Buy Happiness’ Remark Sparks Global Online Debate

The world’s richest man, Elon Musk, has reignited a long-running debate about wealth and well-being after publicly endorsing the view that money does not guarantee happiness.

In a post shared on Wednesday, the Tesla and SpaceX chief executive wrote: “Whoever said ‘money can’t buy happiness’ really knew what they were talking about.” The comment quickly drew widespread attention, with many interpreting it as a rare reflection on personal struggles despite his vast fortune.

Within hours, the post amassed more than 33 million views and over 245,000 likes, triggering intense online discussions about whether financial security truly equates to happiness.

In Nigeria, the statement resonated strongly, prompting comparisons with Afrobeat singer Adekunle Gold’s 2021 song It Is What It Is, in which he sang, “Money no dey bring happiness oh / Na when I get money I realise oh.” Like Musk’s remark, the song reflects the idea that wealth alone does not guarantee fulfillment.

Reactions online were sharply divided. Some users agreed with Musk’s perspective, arguing that while money may not buy happiness, it can ease life’s hardships. One commenter wrote, “Money doesn’t buy happiness, but it makes misery a lot more comfortable.”

Others pushed back, highlighting the emotional and psychological toll of poverty. A widely shared response read, “Being broke while watching your mates win will buy you depression, envy, and sleepless nights for free.”

Several commenters questioned Musk’s stance given his extraordinary wealth, with one joking, “Only $1m will make my smile for 20 years straight.” Faith-based perspectives also emerged, including comments suggesting that while money may solve material problems, true fulfillment comes from spiritual grounding.

The debate underscores a familiar global divide: whether happiness is rooted in financial comfort, personal fulfillment, or values beyond material wealth.
