Morocco Look Ahead as AFCON Title Dispute with Senegal Heads to Legal Battle

0

Despite an ongoing legal challenge from Senegal over the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) title, Morocco have made it clear they are focused on the future rather than the controversy surrounding their newly awarded crown.

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) recently handed Morocco a 3-0 victory following their 1-0 defeat in the January final, citing disciplinary breaches after several Senegalese players walked off the pitch in protest of a penalty decision. Senegal, however, continue to contest the ruling and have initiated legal proceedings to reclaim the title.

Morocco’s attention, meanwhile, remains firmly on upcoming competitions. The Atlas Lions played out a 1-1 draw against Ecuador in Madrid on Friday, marking their first outing since the controversial decision and the debut of new head coach Mohamed Ouahbi.

Goalkeeper Yassine Bounou dismissed discussions around the ruling, emphasizing the team’s forward-looking mindset.

“We’re focused on what’s to come and not getting into that topic,” Bounou said. “We stand by what our federation has stated and we’re looking ahead.”

Moroccan fans appear largely supportive of CAF’s decision, insisting that regulations must be upheld. Many believe the ruling, though delayed, justifies adding a second AFCON title to their historic 1976 triumph.

With expectations high following their historic semi-final finish at the 2022 FIFA World Cup, Morocco are now preparing for the 2026 tournament. They are set to face Brazil in a highly anticipated group-stage clash on June 13.

Coach Ouahbi remains confident in his squad’s quality, describing his team as “top-level” and focused on maximizing their strengths rather than dwelling on perceived shortcomings.

While the legal battle with Senegal continues behind the scenes, Morocco’s priority is clear: proving their worth on the pitch and building momentum toward global success.
