A chieftain of the African Democratic Congress, ADC, Dele Momodu, has criticised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu over his assessment of Nigeria’s economic condition, accusing the administration of worsening the country’s situation since assuming office in 2023.

Momodu, a former presidential candidate, made the remarks while reacting to Tinubu’s Independence Day address to Nigerians.

He said the President’s speech, rather than inspiring celebration on the nation’s 66th Independence anniversary, left him disappointed and concerned about the state of the country.

Tinubu had, in his address, likened Nigeria’s condition when he assumed office to that of a cancer patient who had been relying on painkillers to stay alive.

Reacting to the analogy, Momodu questioned the appropriateness of the comparison, particularly given Tinubu’s presentation of himself as a leader capable of diagnosing and treating the country’s challenges.

According to Momodu, Nigeria was, at worst, at the second stage of the “cancer” when Tinubu took office and should not have deteriorated to what he described as “stage-four cancer.”

He argued that the administration was expected to stabilise the country and prevent further deterioration rather than allow the situation to worsen.

Momodu also criticised some of the administration’s early economic decisions, describing Tinubu’s “first prescription on day one” as a major mistake.

He said the President’s explanation of Nigeria’s condition had failed to give citizens the sense of optimism expected during an Independence Day address.
