A Russian missile strike has killed a 17-year-old girl and injured at least nine others in Ukraine’s eastern Kharkiv region, local authorities confirmed on Tuesday, as Moscow ramps up its daily aerial assaults ahead of winter.
Kharkiv Governor Oleg Synegubov said the teenager, who suffered critical injuries in the attack on the city of Berestyn, died in hospital. Among the wounded is a 16-year-old boy, while emergency responders continue operations at the scene.
The strike is part of a surge in Russian missile and drone bombardments targeting Ukraine’s energy infrastructure and repeatedly hitting civilian areas in recent months.
In neighbouring Dnipropetrovsk region, Governor Vladyslav Gaivanenko reported fires in Dnipro and surrounding districts after a drone attack. Details regarding casualties were yet to be confirmed.
The assault follows a deadly Monday in eastern Ukraine, where five people were killed and a kindergarten was destroyed in a series of Russian strikes. Three civilians died in Balakliya, a frontline city in Kharkiv region, while another attack claimed two lives in Dnipropetrovsk.
The escalation comes shortly after French President Emmanuel Macron and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky signed a new defence accord, enabling Kyiv to acquire up to 100 fighter jets, as well as drones and other military equipment.
