Argentina captain Lionel Messi has praised Spain’s teenage sensation Lamine Yamal ahead of Sunday’s highly anticipated FIFA World Cup final, describing the Barcelona winger as one of the best players in the world.
Speaking during a conversation with seven-time Super Bowl champion Tom Brady on Friday, the Inter Miami star said he has closely followed Yamal’s rise because of the youngster’s performances for Barcelona.
“Yamal is one of the best in the world right now,” Messi said.
“Lamine is a fantastic player whom I’ve followed closely because he plays for a club I love and always wish the best for. He’s a global icon at just 19 years old.”
The World Cup final carries historic significance for both players. Messi is aiming to become the first footballer to captain his country to back-to-back FIFA World Cup titles, while Yamal could make history as the second-youngest player to start and win a World Cup final.
