Melania Trump to Chair Historic UN Security Council Session Amid Rising U.S.–UN Tensions

Melania Trump is set to preside over a United Nations Security Council meeting on Monday, marking an unprecedented moment in diplomatic history as the United States assumes the Council’s rotating presidency for March.

According to her office, the former First Lady will “make history at the United Nations, taking the gavel as the United States assumes the Security Council Presidency to emphasize education’s role in advancing tolerance and world peace.”

UN spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric confirmed that the session will be the first time a First Lady — or First Gentleman — has chaired a Security Council meeting.

The high-profile appearance comes at a complex moment in global diplomacy. The announcement of Melania Trump’s role was made last week, prior to the United States launching military action against Iran. A U.S.-Israeli campaign reportedly began Saturday with strikes in Tehran that killed Iran’s Supreme Leader, prompting retaliatory missile and drone attacks across parts of the Middle East.

Observers note that the Security Council session will unfold against the backdrop of strained relations between Washington and the United Nations. In recent years, tensions have intensified over funding and policy disagreements. Although the United States recently paid $160 million toward the UN’s regular budget after contributing nothing in 2025, it remains approximately $4 billion in arrears for both regular and peacekeeping budgets. UN Secretary-General António Guterres has warned of severe financial strain and the risk of institutional collapse if funding gaps persist.

Since returning to office last year, President Donald Trump has withdrawn U.S. support from several major UN agencies, including the World Health Organization. At a recent gathering of his proposed “Board of Peace” initiative in Washington — which aims to mobilize international support for Gaza’s reconstruction — Trump reiterated criticism that the UN has failed in its core mission.

Melania Trump has previously engaged in diplomatic efforts, notably advocating for the return of Ukrainian children allegedly abducted during Russia’s war in Ukraine.

Analysts suggest that despite policy contradictions, most Security Council members are likely to adopt a cautious tone during the meeting. “Most Council members will want to ‘play nice’ when Melania is in the room, as few would risk damaging their bilateral relations with Washington over a UN meeting with little consequence,” said Daniel Forti of the International Crisis Group.

The session is expected to focus on education as a tool for promoting tolerance and peace — themes that contrast sharply with escalating geopolitical tensions and renewed scrutiny of America’s role within the UN system.
