Makinde Boasts PDP Will Retain Oyo Beyond 2027, Reclaim Presidency

BREAKING: G5’s Makinde declared winner, reelected for second term

Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State has declared that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) will remain in power in the state beyond 2027 and reclaim the presidency in the next general elections.

Makinde made the declaration on Monday during the Oyo State PDP Congress held at the Lekan Salami Sports Complex, Adamasingba, Ibadan, where thousands of party faithful, delegates, and stakeholders converged from across the state’s 33 local government areas.

The governor, who hailed the peaceful conduct of the congress, said the rancour-free process demonstrated the party’s strength and commitment to internal democracy. According to him, the unity on display is a clear signal that the PDP is prepared to dominate elections from the local to the national level.

“I want to congratulate all of us in advance because I believe, in this party, we won’t all labour in vain,” Makinde said. “This exercise is to ensure that PDP continues to remain in power in Oyo State beyond 2027. The executives that will emerge from this exercise — your mandate is clear: deliver PDP from the Presidential to the Councillorship position in 2027.”

At the congress, Hon. Dayo Ogungbenro was re-elected as PDP State Chairman. Alhaji Wasiu Adeleke emerged as Deputy Chairman, while Oyelami Oyeyemi, Olawumi Elizabeth Toyin, and Bello Kazeem Olalekan were elected as State Secretary, Women Leader, and Youth Leader respectively.

Out of 4,050 accredited delegates, 4,031 votes were cast, with 3,957 votes securing victory for each elected executive.

Senator Austin Akobundu, Chairman of the PDP Congress Electoral Panel, commended Makinde for providing strong leadership that has strengthened the Oyo PDP. He expressed confidence that the party would return all its candidates in the 2027 elections.

Other leaders, including PDP National Deputy Chairman (South), Ambassador Taofeek Arapaja; former Speaker, Oyo State House of Assembly, Senator Monsurat Sunmonu; and Senator Gbenga Babalola, praised the governor for stabilising the party.

Former Jigawa State Governor and PDP founding member, Alhaji Sule Lamido, also lauded the emergence of the new executives, urging them to work for the continued progress of the party.

The event was attended by Deputy Governor Barr Bayo Lawal, Speaker Adebo Ogundoyin, serving and former lawmakers, and monitored by officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
