Mahdi Shehu Slams First Lady’s Claim of Global Recognition, Says Nigeria Is Losing Respect

Abuja, Nigeria — Political commentator Mahdi Shehu has faulted recent remarks by Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, in which she suggested that the country is gaining global recognition despite ongoing security and economic challenges.

Reacting via his verified X (formerly Twitter) account on Tuesday, Shehu described the claim as misleading, arguing that Nigeria is not enjoying international respect but is instead being viewed unfavourably on the global stage.

“It is a lie. Maybe Remi is mistaken Nigeria for Niger Republic,” Shehu wrote, adding that Nigeria is increasingly being perceived as a laughing stock among nations.

He cited what he described as clear indicators of national decline, including widespread decay, hunger, starvation, soaring unemployment, and growing signs of public discontent.

Shehu also directed criticism at the First Lady personally, urging her to reassess her understanding of the country’s current realities. “Pastor Remi should go back to the drawing table and get more educated on the dangers facing Nigeria under her globetrotting husband,” he stated.

The First Lady reportedly made the comments about Nigeria’s growing global recognition during an appearance on Fox News while on a visit to the United States. Her remarks followed an acknowledgment of Nigeria by U.S. President Donald Trump at the 74th U.S. National Prayer Breakfast in Washington.

Shehu’s reaction has since sparked debate online, with mixed responses from Nigerians over the country’s global image and domestic challenges.
