Labour Party Says Peter Obi Has Not Defected, Describes ADC Move as “Hibernation”

Abuja, Nigeria – The South-West National Chairman of the Labour Party, Abayomi Arambambi, has insisted that former Anambra State Governor and 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, remains a member of the Labour Party, describing his current involvement with the African Democratic Congress (ADC) as a temporary “hibernation.”

Speaking on News Central TV’s Breakfast Central, Arambambi dismissed reports suggesting that the tenure of Labour Party National Chairman, Julius Abure, had expired, saying such claims were wrongly attributed to a Supreme Court judgment.

“It was narrated to the media that the court said that the tenure of Julius Abure had expired, but I want to explain this: no court in Nigeria ever said Abure’s tenure has expired,” Arambambi said. He challenged anyone claiming otherwise to provide evidence, warning that misrepresenting the Supreme Court ruling could amount to perjury.

Turning to Obi’s political status, Arambambi emphasized that the former presidential candidate has not formally left the Labour Party. “Peter Obi has not left Labour Party; he is just hibernating in ADC,” he said, noting that unlike other politicians who openly resigned from their parties to join ADC, Obi has not obtained an ADC membership card.

Arambambi also suggested that neither Obi nor Abia State Governor Alex Otti has intentions to contest the 2027 presidential election. “They are not running for presidency in 2027. They just want to run to make sure Nigeria is ungovernable,” he alleged.

His comments come amid growing speculation over Obi’s political future, following his engagement with the ADC — a move that some have viewed as a potential departure from the Labour Party. This development is occurring against a backdrop of widespread defections in Nigeria’s political scene, with numerous high-profile politicians leaving opposition parties for the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), while others explore alternative platforms like the ADC.
