The Labour Party has clarified that no aspirant—including its 2023 presidential flagbearer, Peter Obi—will receive an automatic ticket ahead of the 2027 general elections. The party says all elective positions, from the presidency to state and local offices, will be contested strictly through transparent primaries.
National Publicity Secretary, Obiora Ifoh, reaffirmed that the party remains committed to internal democracy and will follow due process in selecting candidates.
According to him, the National Executive Committee (NEC) has already made clear that every aspirant must emerge through a properly convened national convention.
“There is no automatic ticket for anybody, whether presidential, governorship, or chairmanship aspirants,” Ifoh stated.
He added that despite ongoing tensions between Peter Obi and the Julius Abure-led leadership, the party is still open to reconciliation with Obi and all other aggrieved members.
On questions surrounding Obi’s current political affiliation, Ifoh stressed that only the former Anambra governor can clarify his position.
“Whether he is in the ADC or Labour Party, he is the only one who can answer that question,” he said.
