Kuje Prison Officers Foil Attempt to Smuggle Drugs Hidden in Visitor’s Clothes

ABUJA — The Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) has thwarted an attempt to smuggle illicit substances into the Kuje custodial centre in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

The spokesman of the FCT Command of NCoS, Samson Duza, disclosed the incident in a statement on Monday, revealing that the suspect, identified as Njimogu Ikedi, was caught during a routine search around 12:45 p.m. on Saturday.

Ikedi had allegedly concealed items suspected to be cannabis sativa and other psychoactive drugs in his clothes while attempting to visit an inmate.

According to Duza, the Controller of Corrections in the FCT, Christopher Jen, immediately ordered the suspect’s arrest. He has since been handed over to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) for investigation and prosecution.

Jen warned that visitors with “ulterior motives” will always be detected by vigilant officers, urging the public to support the service in its mission to reform and rehabilitate inmates for the safety of society.

The latest interception comes more than a year after a woman was arrested for smuggling drugs into the same facility by disguising as a visitor and hiding substances inside food packs.
