Former spokesperson of the Labour Party (LP) Presidential Campaign Council, Kenneth Okonkwo, has declared that both the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the Labour Party no longer function as viable political platforms in Nigeria, insisting they only exist “on paper.”
Speaking on Channels Television’s breakfast show on Friday, Okonkwo argued that the two parties had lost relevance, pointing to the recent developments in the African Democratic Congress (ADC) as evidence of a more functional structure.
According to him, the coalition that birthed the ADC’s new leadership was not a merger but a complete absorption of political forces into one party.
“You see what happened with ADC is a novel thing. This is the first time in Nigeria that the national executive of a political party resigned and allowed a new executive to take over on their own. So, this is not a merger; it is a full dissolution of the coalition into a political party,” Okonkwo explained.
He further argued that PDP and LP had become irrelevant since their leaders now openly back other political parties.
“Well, strictly speaking, there is no more PDP or LP. They only exist on paper because their members are either supporting APC or ADC. If the leaders of PDP can come out two years before the election and openly endorse another party’s presidential candidate, then that is the end of PDP,” he said.
Okonkwo stressed that political parties are meant to be vehicles for the people, but in the current reality, only the ADC appears to be filling that role.
