Nigerian singer Kingsley Okonkwo, widely known as Kcee, has finally spoken up about his long-speculated rift with fellow highlife star Flavour.
The tension between both artistes resurfaced in 2024 after Flavour dropped a cryptic post online shading an unnamed colleague for “copying his musical style.” Although no name was mentioned, Kcee fired back, warning Flavour against gatekeeping Igbo cultural music and reminding him that he joined the industry earlier.
In a recent interview with Yanga FM Lagos, Kcee shed light on their history and the origin of their strained relationship. He revealed that his first encounter with Flavour happened years ago when talent manager Soso Soberekon brought the young singer to him with hopes of securing a record deal.
According to Kcee, he declined the deal because he did not see the potential in Flavour at the time—not because of any personal issue.
“I came into the industry before Flavour. Soso brought him to me years ago to sign to my label. I was already driving exotic cars and living large before he came to Lagos. I told Soso I couldn’t sign Flavour because I didn’t see the potential then,” he explained.
Kcee, however, believes the fallout between them has little to do with the rejected record deal. Instead, he attributes it to what he describes as “superiority complex” within the industry, where some colleagues underrate his talent because he chooses humility over noise.
“Till now, I don’t understand the reason for his beef with me—especially that incident where he alleged someone was copying him,” Kcee said.
“The truth is, when people write you off hoping you stay stagnant, and then you grow beyond their expectations, it becomes a problem. Many colleagues underrate me because I don’t brag. But time always proves them wrong. Some who doubted me before have come back to apologise.”
Despite the lingering tension, Kcee maintained that time will eventually reveal the truth behind the strained relationship.
