KANO, Nigeria: Governor Abba Yusuf of Kano State has called on presidential aspirants, particularly those from the North, to defer their ambitions until 2031, insisting that the South must complete its two-term cycle before power returns to the North.
Speaking on Sunday at the Government House in Kano, Yusuf also came out in support of the continued rotation of Nigeria’s presidency between the North and the South.
“I urge support for President Bola Tinubu to complete his second term because this would allow the South to complete its two-term cycle before power returns to the North,” the governor said.
He argued that each region should be allowed to produce a president for two consecutive terms, noting that a full eight years gives an administration enough time to implement major policies and development programmes.
“We should allow the South to complete its two-term cycle. After that, power will return to the North in 2031,” Yusuf added.
The governor appealed to political stakeholders, especially in the North, to exercise patience and allow the current political arrangement to run its course through the 2027–2031 tenure.
His remarks add to the ongoing debate over zoning and power rotation ahead of the 2027 general elections.
