Kano Deputy Governor Gwarzo Resigns Amid Impeachment Pressure, Denies Allegations

The Deputy Governor of Kano State, Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo, has resigned from office following an ongoing impeachment process initiated by the Kano State House of Assembly.

His resignation was confirmed on Friday by his spokesperson, Ibrahim Shuaibu. The development was also corroborated by Habib Mohammed, who spoke on behalf of the Kwankwasiyya Movement.

According to the Assembly, the impeachment process was triggered by allegations of misappropriation against the deputy governor. He had been given a two-week ultimatum to respond to the claims, a deadline which expired the previous Friday, coinciding with the Eid-el-Fitr public holiday.

In an official statement released to journalists, the Kwankwasiyya Movement described the resignation as a strategic decision aimed at preserving stability in the state’s governance.

“This decision, though difficult, has been taken in the overall interest of the people and the stability of governance in Kano State,” the statement read. It noted that recent developments had significantly limited the deputy governor’s ability to effectively carry out his duties.

The group emphasized that Gwarzo’s resignation should not be interpreted as an admission of guilt, maintaining that he remains confident in his innocence and stands by his record of public service.

“Rather, this step demonstrates statesmanship, political maturity, and a commitment to avoiding unnecessary tension that could hinder governance and development,” the statement added.

Gwarzo is expected to focus more on strengthening the Kwankwasiyya Movement and engaging in political realignments ahead of the 2027 general elections.
