The Kano State Government has scrapped the Ministry of Higher Education and merged its responsibilities with the Ministry of Education as part of a restructuring of the state’s education sector.
Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf announced the decision on Monday, stating that the move is aimed at improving coordination within the education system and reducing administrative costs.
Under the new arrangement, the Ministry of Education will now oversee all matters related to universities, colleges, scholarships, and other tertiary education issues across the state.
To ensure effective management of the sector, the government said a Directorate of Higher Education will be created within the Ministry of Education to handle policies and programmes relating to tertiary institutions.
The restructuring also removes the Deputy Governor, Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo, from his role as Commissioner for Higher Education, a position he previously held alongside his duties as deputy governor.
The development comes amid reports of political tension between the governor and his deputy, including speculations about possible impeachment moves against the deputy governor.
However, the Kano State Government maintained that the restructuring is primarily aimed at strengthening oversight, improving the quality of tertiary education, eliminating duplication of functions, and cutting the cost of governance in the state.
