Former Abia State Governor and Senate Chief Whip, Orji Uzor Kalu, has blamed the rising wave of insecurity in the country on politically driven actors working within Nigeria and from abroad.
Speaking on Channels Television’s Sunday Politics, Kalu said the current pattern of terrorist attacks and bandit activities closely mirrors what occurred during former President Goodluck Jonathan’s administration, where election seasons allegedly emboldened groups aiming to pressure the government.
According to him, certain elements in the international community, collaborating with local players, are “orchestrating” violence to destabilise the current administration and influence political outcomes ahead of 2027.
Kalu argued that recent commentary from global figures — including remarks by former U.S. President Donald Trump — had further amplified conversation around Nigeria’s insecurity, emboldening those who benefit from public panic.
He commended President Bola Tinubu’s response to the situation, revealing that the President cancelled all official engagements on Sunday to focus solely on national security following recent cases of mass abductions.
“What we are seeing is something that always comes with elections,” Kalu said. “People try to pressurise the government in power. You will remember that when President Jonathan was here, similar things happened. They put a lot of pressure on the president.”
He stressed that the current wave of attacks is not organic but politically induced.
“The terrorists and the bandits are orchestrated by some members of the international community and local people who really want to destabilise government,” he said.
Kalu expressed confidence that the kidnapped schoolchildren and other abducted citizens would be rescued, noting that security agencies are under intense pressure but fully mobilised.
“This is politically motivated,” he insisted. “You can see this happening time without number in the past few months. We kept quiet until President Trump started talking about people being killed in Nigeria. And people are already talking about the 2027 election.”
He alleged that hired mercenaries are being deployed by political figures to create instability and weaken a government he says is focused on economic reforms.
“These people are mercenaries brought by politicians… people bought by individuals who want to destabilise a president ready to fight for our economy,” Kalu said.
