Abuja, Nigeria – Senator Orji Uzor Kalu (APC, Abia North) has thrown his weight behind the Senate’s decision to approve the electronic transmission of election results directly from polling units across the country.
The endorsement followed Tuesday’s emergency plenary session, during which the Red Chamber amended Section 60 of the Electoral Act to permit presiding officers to electronically transmit results to the Independent National Electoral Commission’s (INEC) Results Viewing Portal (IReV).
The amendment establishes electronic transmission as the primary method of result collation in areas where the required technology is available and functional, a move lawmakers say is aimed at strengthening transparency and public confidence in the electoral process.
In a statement issued after the plenary, Kalu reaffirmed his support for the reform.
“Today at the emergency plenary, I supported and added my voice to the Senate’s new position approving the electronic transmission of election results from polling units across Nigeria,” he said. “Our democracy must work for every Nigerian, everywhere.”
The Senate’s decision is expected to shape preparations for future elections, as stakeholders continue to debate measures to enhance credibility and accountability in Nigeria’s electoral system.
