Chairman of the Senate Committee on the South East Development Commission (SEDC), Senator Orji Uzor Kalu, has claimed that some of the bandits fueling insecurity across the country are mercenaries allegedly imported by politicians.
Speaking on Sunday Politics, a Channels Television programme monitored by DAILY POST, the former Abia State governor linked the renewed wave of violence to political manoeuvring ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Kalu expressed concern that while citizens are being killed, some political actors appear more focused on electoral ambitions than national stability.
“People are being killed in Nigeria and you see people talk about the forthcoming 2027 elections,” he said. “These people (bandits) are partially mercenaries brought by politicians. They are people brought by individuals, centred on destabilising the president who is ready to revamp our economy.”
When asked whether President Bola Tinubu was aware of these alleged political sponsors, Kalu said the president has access to extensive intelligence and is not unaware of the forces at play.
“Tinubu is the president of Nigeria. He has a lot of information around him,” he said. “As a citizen of this country, I’m aware that people are sponsoring these bandits to destabilise Nigeria, but we are equal to the task. The Federal Government will challenge them.”
Kalu’s remarks add a new layer to the national conversation on insecurity, raising questions about political complicity and the need for a more coordinated response to criminal violence across the country.
