Former President Goodluck Jonathan has cautioned political actors against turning politics into a theatre of misconduct, warning that Nigeria’s democracy is being choked by rising hostility and irresponsible behaviour.
Jonathan spoke on Thursday during the 10th anniversary dinner of the Goodluck Jonathan Foundation, which also marked his 68th birthday. The event drew African statesmen, diplomats, political leaders and business executives.
He stressed that true leadership must be grounded in responsibility, nation-building and self-restraint, adding that democracy can only thrive when political players uphold civility and accountability.
“Politics is not for rascals. It is for people who want to build, not destroy,” the former president declared, lamenting the surge of aggressive rhetoric and confrontational political conduct across the continent.
Jonathan reflected on the vision behind his foundation, noting that its decade-long work has focused on diplomacy, governance reforms, peacebuilding, mediation and strengthening democratic institutions.
He also expressed concern over the increasing wave of violent attacks and kidnappings nationwide. Citing recent abductions in parts of the country, he urged leaders at all levels to take their duties more seriously by protecting citizens and preserving the nation’s democratic order.
Jonathan reiterated that safeguarding Nigeria’s stability requires collective responsibility and a renewed commitment to peaceful, democratic engagement.
