Former President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan has dismissed claims of the Peoples Democratic Party’s (PDP) decline, describing it as “alive, strong, and resilient.”
Jonathan made the statement on Tuesday, January 6, 2026, while receiving members of the PDP National Working Committee (NWC), led by National Chairman Kabiru Tanimu Turaki, SAN, at his private office in Abuja.
During the meeting, which centered on reconciliation and strategic preparations for the 2027 general elections, Jonathan reaffirmed the party’s status as a cornerstone of Nigeria’s democracy and the only surviving original political party since 1998.
“The PDP has been a critical contributor to our democracy since 1999. I have benefited from this party, serving as Deputy Governor, Governor, Vice President, and President. I am grateful and remain committed to contributing to its growth,” Jonathan said, emphasizing that the party is more than a political platform—it is a national institution.
He also urged party leaders to prioritize national interest and institutional development over personal considerations, noting that strong political parties are essential for democratic stability.
In response, Turaki thanked Jonathan for his guidance and loyalty and outlined the PDP’s comprehensive “Rebirth Agenda,” aimed at rebuilding and strengthening the party. “Our goal is to return power to the people and reposition the PDP as the party of the majority of Nigerians. We are engaging aggrieved members because a united PDP remains the most viable platform for a balanced and prosperous Nigeria,” he said.
Other members of the delegation included former Niger State Governor Mu’azu Babangida Aliyu, Prof. Jerry Gana, Gen. Ishaya Bamaiyi, Hajiya Zainab Maina, Chief Mike Oghiadome, Mohammed Bello Adoke, SAN, and other members of the NWC.
