The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has announced a change in the official designation of January 15, the day set aside annually by the Federal Government to honour the Armed Forces of Nigeria (AFN).
The day, previously known as Armed Forces Remembrance Day, will now be called Armed Forces Celebration and Remembrance Day, the DHQ said.
Traditionally, January 15 focused mainly on honouring fallen soldiers, with ceremonies such as wreath-laying at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. However, the military said the new name better reflects the full meaning of the occasion.
Explaining the decision, a senior military officer, Major General Uba, said the change underscores the dual purpose of the day — celebrating serving and retired personnel of the Armed Forces, while also remembering those who paid the supreme price in defence of the nation.
According to him, the observance recognises the sacrifices of fallen heroes who gave their lives to protect Nigeria’s territorial integrity, as well as the commitment and bravery of officers and men currently serving across the country to safeguard lives and property.
He noted that the annual commemoration is usually preceded by a week-long programme of activities, which culminates in a grand parade and wreath-laying ceremony on January 15.
“The Armed Forces of Nigeria respectfully urges the media to adopt the term Armed Forces Celebration and Remembrance Day in all future reports and coverage,” Major General Uba said.
He also expressed appreciation to the media for its continued support of the Armed Forces, particularly in the ongoing fight against insecurity, and voiced optimism for even stronger collaboration in the future.
