Iyabo Obasanjo, a governorship aspirant in Ogun State under the All Progressives Congress (APC), has expressed strong support for the party’s use of consensus in selecting candidates ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Speaking on Sunrise Daily on Channels Television, Obasanjo argued that the consensus approach remains an effective strategy for producing credible and electable candidates.
She dismissed concerns that consensus arrangements could lead to the imposition of unpopular candidates, noting that political parties are driven by the need to win elections and would therefore consider public opinion carefully in their decision-making.
According to her, consensus does not override the will of the people but instead reflects a strategic alignment with candidates who have proven grassroots support and electoral viability.
Obasanjo added that the process is unlikely to favour weak aspirants, as doing so could create internal conflict and weaken the party’s chances at the polls.
She also expressed confidence that the consensus arrangement would work in her favour in the race for the APC governorship ticket in Ogun State, citing her popularity and track record in public service, including her previous roles as a commissioner and a senator.
