Italy has joined the growing international outcry over the persistent killings of Christians in Nigeria, issuing a strong condemnation of what it described as “renewed violence” targeting religious communities across the country.
Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, in a statement posted on X, said the attacks had reached an unacceptable level, stressing that religious freedom must be protected without compromise.
“We strongly condemn the renewed violence that has taken place against Christian communities in Nigeria. Religious freedom is an inviolable right,” Meloni wrote.
She called on the Nigerian government to intensify security measures to protect Christian and other religious groups, and to ensure that perpetrators of the attacks are arrested and prosecuted.
“We ask the Nigerian government to strengthen the protection of Christian communities and all religious communities and to prosecute those responsible for these heinous attacks,” she added.
The Italian leader expressed solidarity with affected families and communities, declaring that Italy stands with Nigerians who “today feel in danger because of their religious beliefs.”
Her remarks signal a firm alignment with growing global concern — including previous condemnations from former U.S. President Donald Trump — over the ongoing violence and rising death toll linked to religiously motivated attacks in Africa’s most populous nation.
