Israel Strikes Hezbollah Targets in Southern, Eastern Lebanon Despite Ceasefire

0

Israeli forces carried out multiple airstrikes on southern and eastern Lebanon on Thursday, according to Lebanon’s state-run National News Agency, even as a ceasefire agreement reached in November 2024 remains officially in place.

The Israeli military confirmed the strikes, saying it targeted Hezbollah infrastructure across several locations, including what it described as a military compound used by the Iran-backed group for training and operational courses. In a separate statement, the military said it also struck a Hezbollah operative in the area of Taybeh in southern Lebanon.

Lebanese state media reported that the strikes hit mountainous areas in both the south and the eastern parts of the country. The attacks come amid continued tensions along the border, despite the ceasefire that was intended to end more than a year of cross-border hostilities between Israel and Hezbollah.

Since the truce took effect, Israel has continued military operations in Lebanon and has maintained troops in five areas of southern Lebanon it considers strategically important.

The renewed strikes occurred just ahead of a scheduled meeting on Friday of the ceasefire monitoring committee, which includes representatives from the United States and France.

Earlier this week, two people were killed in Israeli strikes, one of them roughly 30 kilometres (20 miles) south of Beirut. According to an AFP tally based on Lebanese health ministry figures, about 340 people have been killed in Israeli attacks since the ceasefire agreement came into force.
