Israel has reaffirmed that Hamas will be fully disarmed under the United States–sponsored peace framework for Gaza, pushing back against suggestions that the militant group might only halt its use of weapons.
An Israeli official, speaking to AFP on Thursday, stated that the proposed 20-point plan leaves “no future for Hamas” as an armed organisation. “The terror group will be disarmed and Gaza will be demilitarised,” the official said, underscoring Israel’s insistence on a complete end to Hamas’s military capabilities.
The reaction follows comments by senior Hamas figure Khaled Meshaal, who told Al Jazeera on Wednesday that the group is willing to consider a “freeze” on weapons but rejects outright disarmament as outlined in the peace proposal championed by US President Donald Trump.
The differing positions highlight a major sticking point in negotiations, as international pressure grows for a long-term solution to end the conflict and rebuild Gaza.
