IPOB Rejects Kanu–Igboho Comparison, Urges Dialogue and Rule of Law

The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has dismissed comments by presidential aide Sunday Dare concerning the legal cases involving its leader, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, and Yoruba self-determination activist Sunday Igboho, describing the comparison as misleading.

In a statement dated February 18, 2026, and signed by its Media and Publicity Secretary, Comrade Emma Powerful, the group maintained that equating the circumstances surrounding Kanu and Igboho fails to reflect the distinct contexts of their respective movements and legal battles.

IPOB reaffirmed Kanu’s position as leader of the group and emphasized his commitment to what it described as the objectives of the movement. The statement also drew parallels with historical figures who faced legal challenges during periods of political activism, noting that judicial proceedings have often intersected with struggles for self-determination.

While addressing the broader political climate, the group called for constructive dialogue and peaceful engagement in handling issues related to political aspirations and self-determination. IPOB urged Nigerians and relevant authorities to prioritize peace, security, and adherence to the rule of law.

The organization reiterated its commitment to pursuing its goals through advocacy and public engagement, stressing that all parties should operate within legal and democratic frameworks.

The development comes amid ongoing national conversations on governance, security, and political inclusivity across the country.
