Insecurity Now a Daily Tragedy Under Tinubu, Says Peter Obi

ABUJA — Former Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has raised alarm over what he described as the dangerous “normalisation of insecurity” under President Bola Tinubu’s administration.

In a strongly worded statement shared on his verified X handle on Tuesday, titled “The Reality of Insecurity in Today’s Nigeria,” Obi lamented that kidnappings, killings, and violent attacks have become routine across the country, with little urgency from the government.

Citing recent incidents, Obi pointed out the irony of government celebrating a supposed peace deal with bandits in Katsina while, almost simultaneously, 55 people were abducted in neighbouring Zamfara State.

“This contradiction speaks to a disturbing truth, that insecurity has become a normal everyday occurrence in Nigeria,” Obi said. “Behind every number are families torn apart, dreams cut short, and futures stolen.”

The former Anambra governor condemned what he sees as the federal government’s silence in the face of nationwide bloodshed, stressing that a nation cannot thrive when citizens live in perpetual fear.

“A nation cannot grow or prosper when its citizens live in fear. It is now as though the lives of Nigerians do not matter. What is the value of one life when hundreds are kidnapped and killed daily without a national emergency on insecurity?” he asked.

Obi insisted that the first duty of leadership is to protect life and that Nigeria cannot truly claim to be building a nation until the safety of its citizens is made a top priority.

“We must urgently prioritise the protection of lives and property. Nigerians will not accept insecurity as their fate. Our people deserve a country where peace is not an option but the standard. A New Nigeria is possible,” he concluded.
