INEC Proposes ₦873.78bn Budget for 2027 General Elections, ₦209bn Earmarked for Technology

Abuja, Nigeria — The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has proposed a total budget of ₦873.78 billion for the conduct of the 2027 general elections, with more than ₦200 billion allocated specifically to election technology.

The Chairman of the Commission, Prof. Joash Amupitan, presented the proposal on Thursday before a joint committee of the Senate and the House of Representatives on Electoral Matters.

According to Amupitan, the proposed budget is structured into five major components to ensure effective planning and execution of the polls.

A breakdown of the proposal shows that ₦375.75 billion is earmarked for election operations, while ₦92.31 billion is allocated for administrative costs.

The Commission also proposed ₦209.21 billion for election technology, reflecting a significant investment in digital infrastructure and electoral systems. Additionally, ₦154.90 billion is set aside for capital expenditures, and ₦41.61 billion has been allocated for miscellaneous expenses.

The proposal now awaits legislative consideration and approval as preparations gradually begin for the 2027 electoral cycle.
