INEC Chairman Prof. Amupitan Vows Credible, Free, and Fair Elections Under Clear Mandate

Professor Joash Amupitan, the newly sworn-in Chairman of Nigeria’s Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), has pledged to uphold the Constitution and deliver credible, free, and fair elections across the country. Speaking to State House correspondents shortly after his inauguration by President Bola Tinubu at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, Prof. Amupitan emphasized his firm commitment to ensuring the integrity of Nigeria’s electoral system.

The swearing-in ceremony took place during the National Economic Council meeting, which was chaired by Vice President Senator Kashim Shettima and attended by governors and key economic cabinet members. Addressing journalists, the INEC boss said his mandate was clear and that he would steadfastly defend the laws of the Federal Republic of Nigeria relating to elections.

He stated, “I was given a clear charge to ensure credible, fair, and free election. Not just that, I will ensure that that is done. I’m also going to engage all the stakeholders, because no matter how you set the barometer and the level of success, you still need all the stakeholders to be able to succeed.”

Prof. Amupitan’s promise to be firm in carrying out his duties and his pledge to protect Nigeria’s democratic processes comes at a critical time of ongoing electoral reforms aimed at strengthening INEC’s capacity and independence. His leadership is seen as vital in sustaining public confidence ahead of upcoming elections.
