Imported Petrol Cheaper Than Dangote Refinery Fuel by N77 – MEMAN

Imported premium motor spirit (PMS) is currently cheaper than petrol produced by the Dangote Refinery, according to the latest data released by the Major Energies Marketers Association of Nigeria (MEMAN).

MEMAN figures published on Friday show that the average landing cost of imported petrol stood at N721.80 per litre, while the Dangote Refinery’s ex-gantry price was N799 per litre, indicating a price difference of N77.20 per litre in favour of imported fuel.

This development comes despite earlier claims by the Dangote Refinery that marketers would save at least N77.20 per litre by purchasing its petrol at the gantry rather than relying on coastal deliveries.

In a statement issued last week, the 650,000-barrel-per-day refinery argued that coastal delivery, particularly within Lagos, adds avoidable costs that significantly affect fuel pricing and consumer welfare.

“Reliance on coastal delivery introduces avoidable costs with material implications for fuel pricing, consumer welfare, and overall economic well-being,” the refinery said.

According to the refinery, coastal logistics alone could add about N75 per litre to the cost of petrol, potentially pushing pump prices close to N1,000 per litre if transferred to consumers.

However, checks by DAILY POST in Abuja on Sunday showed that petrol prices remained high, selling between N839 and N905 per litre across several filling stations, including MRS, Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL), Ranoil, AA Rano, AP, Mobil, Emedab, Empire Energy, and others.

The pricing gap has renewed debate over fuel supply costs, logistics, and the role of domestic refining in stabilising petrol prices in Nigeria.
