Impeachment Stalled: Court Bars Rivers Chief Judge From Acting on Fubara Case

0

A Rivers State High Court sitting in Port Harcourt has issued an order restraining the Chief Judge of Rivers State from receiving or acting on any impeachment notice against Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, Ngozi Odu.

The court order comes amid moves by members of the Rivers State House of Assembly to commence impeachment proceedings against the governor and his deputy. On Friday, the lawmakers formally wrote to the Chief Judge, requesting the constitution of a panel to investigate allegations of gross misconduct.

The legislators, who said the decision was reached through a unanimous vote, had earlier vowed to push through with the impeachment process.

However, the intervention of the court has effectively stalled the move, placing the impeachment process on hold pending the determination of the legal issues surrounding the matter.

The case is expected to return to court for further proceedings, as the political and legal tension in the state continues to unfold.
