A former Rivers State Commissioner for Information and Communication, Austin Tam-George, has said ongoing attempts to impeach Governor Siminalayi Fubara are unlikely to succeed, citing the governor’s performance record and the absence of concrete allegations against him.
Tam-George made the assertion on Thursday while speaking on Prime Time on Arise Television, where he described the impeachment move as a calculated attempt to undermine Governor Fubara’s chances of securing a second term in office.
According to him, the governor has consistently placed the welfare of Rivers people at the core of his administration, with visible interventions in rural development, housing, education and healthcare, making it difficult for opponents to justify any move to remove him from office.
He argued that a careful review of the impeachment articles reveals a lack of specificity, noting that no clear infraction has been established against either the governor or his deputy.
“What they are trying to do is to scuttle the administration so that the governor doesn’t get to the point where he will be seeking a second term,” Tam-George said.
He also referenced recent comments by former Rivers State Governor and current FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, who reportedly stated during a visit to a local government area that Governor Fubara’s second-term ambition would mark the end of his own political relevance.
Tam-George insisted that the impeachment proceedings are driven by political interests rather than genuine constitutional concerns and expressed confidence that they would ultimately fail.
He advised Governor Fubara to remain focused on governance, transparency and service delivery, stressing that sustained performance would expose the weakness of the impeachment plot.
The former commissioner further called on the All Progressives Congress (APC) to intervene, urging the party not to allow what he described as the humiliation of a sitting governor with one of the strongest performance records in the country.
“If he continues to put the people at the centre of his administration, there is no way these moves can be justified,” he said.
