Maiduguri, Borno State — Governor Babagana Zulum of Borno State has said he has no preferred successor ahead of the end of his tenure in May 2027, dismissing speculation that he is backing any candidate for future political positions.
Zulum made the clarification over the weekend while addressing a critical All Progressives Congress (APC) stakeholders’ meeting in Maiduguri.
The governor said his administration remains focused on consolidating security gains and delivering meaningful development to the people of Borno State, rather than engaging in succession politics.
He also reaffirmed his commitment to a fair, transparent, and credible process in the forthcoming APC congresses, stressing that the integrity of the exercise is crucial to the unity and future strength of the party.
According to Zulum, the party must allow fresh faces to emerge through a democratic process, noting that inclusivity and strong grassroots participation are key to sustaining the APC’s dominance in the state.
Addressing speculations about his influence over party tickets, the governor categorically stated that he has not anointed any candidate for party offices or elective positions.
“I have no candidate for any position, and I do not know who will succeed me,” Zulum said. “I have entrusted the choice of leaders to Almighty Allah, in line with the democratic will of the party members and the people of Borno State.”
His remarks were received by stakeholders as a call for internal democracy and renewed party cohesion ahead of future electoral contests.
