Hon. Fred Agbedi, Member of the House of Representatives Committee on Electoral Affairs, has commended the opposition’s actions during Tuesday’s heated House session on the e-transmission of election results.
Speaking on Politics Today, a programme on Channels Television, Agbedi described the opposition’s conduct as a demonstration of commitment to Nigeria and its citizens.
Tuesday’s session saw a dramatic walkout by some House members in protest against moves to reverse the passage of the Electoral Act Amendment Bill, DAILY POST reports. Agbedi noted, “The Reps members were chanting as they staged a walk out of the House. It showed their displeasure. It couldn’t have led to that level, but I say kudos to the opposition. They made me proud. They did their best. They stood for Nigeria and Nigerians, and for the right thing to be done.”
He added that the chanting escalated when the majority party, APC, began treating the issue as a party matter. The walkout followed the adoption of Clause 60(3) of the Electoral Act Amendment Bill, during which some members were reported to have chanted “APC Ole.”
Agbedi’s remarks underline the growing political tensions in the House as lawmakers debate reforms in electoral processes.
